Open and survive the Surface

Open the Surface, learn its separate progression chain, and remove the escalating ward damage before treating it as a normal route.

Spoilers: storyReady when these are doneThe Surface is open. The active damage pressure is identified as the ward, Strife, or ordinary enemy damage.Unraveling a Fateful Bond is complete or has an exact unmet requirement. Both routes have a named current purpose.

Do these first

Full steps below
  1. Brew Permeation of Witching-Wards
  2. Treat early Surface visits as scouting
  3. Cure the ward
  4. Expect the Blessing of Strife early
  5. Alternate routes for a reason

Separate the ward, Strife, and ordinary damage

Permeation of Witching-Wards has appeared or its Hecate conversation is the next explicit requirement.

The Surface has unique resources, encounters, and story requirements. Its early self-damage is a progression gate, not a build-quality test.

What the Surface changes

  • Permeation of Witching-Wards needs one Cinder, one Shadow, and three Moly after the relevant Hecate conversation.
  • The Surface ward starts at one self-damage every five seconds and increases each tick.
  • Unraveling a Fateful Bond removes the ward after its recipe and materials become available.

Open the route and remove its progression penalties

  1. Brew Permeation of Witching-Wards

Use it when the recipe appears and its three resources are funded. This opens the warded gateway to the Surface.

  2. Treat early Surface visits as scouting

Gather route-specific resources, meet available characters, and learn the opening encounter. The ward is supposed to end these early visits, so it is not a fair test of the weapon or Boons.

  3. Cure the ward

Complete Unraveling a Fateful Bond as soon as its reveal requirements and cost are met. It is the prerequisite for ordinary Surface endurance.

  4. Expect the Blessing of Strife early

Eris appears at deterministic progression stages, not random locations. Her curse begins at 20 percent increased enemy damage, rises by 5 percentage points after each encounter up to 100 percent, and ends with the current night.

  5. Alternate routes for a reason

Use the Underworld for its story and boss materials. Use the Surface for its separate chain, Bronze, route plants, and required clears. Let the next unmet requirement choose the route.

If Strife ends the attempt early

If the Surface penalty or Strife curse makes a clear unrealistic, gather the required materials, progress the relevant conversations, and leave the clear for a later night. Those effects are designed to stop early overextension.
